Miss the Charlottesville Life

As an out-of-state student, you might feel a little behind at the beginning because so many Virginians already have connections, but once you get adjusted, you'll feel like you're in a dream. It can be tough at times, but UVa has the greatest motivating community - people that will push you to do things you never thought possible before. I made friends that motivated me to learn a new language, run marathons, create animated movies, live in an international dorm, and double major and minor. And these same friends brought me ice cream on my bad days and made me a friendship jar for my birthday. And although there is a small elitist subculture, most of the students at UVa are super socially-aware, willing to learn, and diverse in many ways. Charlottesville also has a unique retro - vibe to it that I can't quite explain; almost as if the town takes us back to a previous time when people would bike to each other's houses to go for a hike or swim in the lake. Charlottesville gives students this kind of experience today, and if I could go back to that upbeat town with golden sunsets and purple mountain skies, I would in a heartbeat.

My time at Virginia was something truly special. I would not trade my four years at Virginia for anything, and if given the opportunity to scam my way back in for graduate school in the future, I most certainly will take it. Go Hoos.

Elite Faculty at a Public University

UVA has all the perks of an Ivy League quality faculty, and yet you can also avoid the pompous atmosphere. UVA faculty and students are extremely down to earth. Sports programs are strong and well supported. Far fewer legacy admits than other elite schools so the environment really embraces intellectual merit. Altogether UVA is a truly unique educational experience that cultivates personal skills and values often undervalued at other elite undergrad schools.

The great, the good, the bad, and the ugly.

UVA is a beautiful leading national liberal arts university, with extremely strong undergraduate and graduate professional schools. And UVA is big enough that most students can make friends and find a niche. Some niches (i.e., social and professional organizations) are more prestigious than others. Anyhow, now some of the bad/ugly: UVA is a leading Southern University which means racism, classism, sexism, and a host of other historical-social ills continue to manifest at UVA in the present. While UVA seems committed to being a better version of itself, it is still a work in progress ... which is perhaps a good thing. UVA can be a bubble for bright students or place where bright students can start to ask important questions of themselves and institutions.

Love UVA, go Hoos

This is an excellent school. It has top notch academics and a great social scene (don't be fooled by the small size of the town - there's plenty going on)! Thanks to my BA degree, I now have a great paying job at a prestigious management consulting firm that I really enjoy. A degree from UVA will definitely open a lot of doors.

Opportunities abound!

I am a parent of a son who graduated from the McIntire School of Business. He loved all his classes, was Rush chair for his fraternity and had a job offer from an investment bank in Manhattan and a signing bonus before he began his fourth year! He had many job offers . He made life long friends, and even keeps in touch with some of his professors. He is now in San Francisco working in private equity. His degrees in Finance and Accounting from the University of Virginia prepared him well for the rigors and demands of the banking world. As a parent I would highly recommend this school.

Every hoo I've ever spoken to agrees that the 4 years they spent attending Jefferson's University were the most influential of their lives! Upon acceptance, it's as if every door is suddenly swung wide open just for you and from now on, anyone who finds out you're a UVA student is going to subconsciously (or consciously) put you on a pedestal. UVA's reputation carries some serious weight, and rightfully so. At UVA, you have direct access to world renowned lecturers other colleges can only read about. You have a class filled with peers as equally impressive and driven as you to help you achieve success. You have an endless number of social/professional organizations at your fingertips where you'll meet everything from self-made millionaires at age 18 to olympic gold medalists at 22. If prestige, history, first-class academics, award winning athletics, and nightlife that puts all other VA universities to shame (if you think UVA is a school for nerds, roll 3rd floor trin) are what you're after, UVA is the place for you. The sacrifice and dedication required to earn yourself one of those coveted spots as an incoming first year will be well worth it when you get there. Side note: if you have your heart set on the Southern Ivy, but are putting yourself down thinking you'll never get in because you're "not smart enough", "not athletic enough", "not leading enough", etc, etc....stop. Everyone has the capacity to get in this school (or any school) if they want it bad enough, even you! Instead of making excuses as to why you can't before trying, go call the admissions office of your dream school today, learn the ins-and-outs of what they're looking for in an applicant, and then become that applicant. You can totally make it happen if you're willing sacrifice enough and never take your eyes off the prize. Good luck, and never forget that you've got just as much of what it takes as anyone else does, you just gotta want it badly enough...so go get it!
