The Darden School of Business at University of Virginia (Darden) offers these departments and concentrations: accounting, consulting, e-commerce, economics, entrepreneurship, ethics, finance, general management, international business, leadership, manufacturing and technology management, marketing, not-for-profit management, production/operations management, organizational behavior, portfolio management, supply chain management/logistics, quantitative analysis/statistics and operations research, tax, and technology. Its tuition is full-time: $66,436 per year (in-state); full-time: $68,754 per year (out-of-state); executive: $136,030 total program (in-state); executive: $136,030 total program (out-of-state); specialty master's: $59,600 total program (in-state); and specialty master's: $59,600 total program (out-of-state). At graduation, 83.90 percent of graduates of the full-time program are employed.
Students at the University of Virgina Darden Graduate School of Business Administration learn through the case method. First year students tackle cases in assigned Learning Teams, groups of about six students. The Darden Graduate School of Business Administration also offers executive MBA and Ph.D. degrees, as well as global MBA for executives and executive education programs.
The MBA class has about 340 students, about a third of whom are female. Slightly less than 10 percent of Darden students have served in the military, and the school offers several military leadership electives. There are more than 40 student clubs, some career-focused and others social. Students can study abroad through Global Business Experiences, one- or two-week courses that examine business issues in places such as Barcelona and Bahia, Brazil. Graduate students can live in university-owned housing or can find private housing throughout Charlottesville, Va. and beyond.

Like all the academic departments at the University of Virginia, the School of Law operates on a strict, student-run honor system. Students pledge not to lie, cheat or steal, and anyone found guilty by a peer jury is expelled from the school. Each class has about 350 students, and the student body has slightly more males than females. Students can earn joint degrees, such as a J.D. and an MBA through the Darden School of Business in four years.
Students can tailor their education at special school institutes like the Center for Oceans Law and Policy and the Center for National Security Law. Thanks to a $1 million gift from former "The Price is Right" host and animal rights advocate Bob Barker, the school has an animal law program. There are more than 60 on-campus organizations to check out, and students can test their legal skills in about 20 hands-on clinics.
Students can study the law abroad during in their second and third years, either through a semester exchange program in countries including New Zealand, Germany, Israel and England. Third year students can earn a dual degree from France’s? Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne Law School and Institut d’études Politiques (Sciences Po) and can sit for the French bar exam. There is limited on-campus housing for law students, and most choose to live elsewhere in Charlottesville, Va.

Its tuition is full-time: $43,828 (in-state) and full-time: $53,952 (out-of-state). The faculty-student ratio at University of Virginia is 1.8:1. The School of Medicine has 1,145 full-time faculty on staff.
The University of Virginia School of Medicine has a strong medical school ranking for both research and primary care, as well as a stated commitment to public service. Training at the UVA School of Medicine is centered on the Next Generation Cells to Society Curriculum, or NxGen, which combines the training of basic and clinical sciences. In addition to the M.D. program, the UVA School of Medicine confers Ph.D. and master’s degrees.
Ph.D. students at the University of Virginia School of Medicine can pursue a biomedical sciences degree (BIMS), among others. Students earning a BIMS do some formal classwork, but also significant laboratory research, during which they rotate among three faculty mentors. BIMS students participate in the research community through research retreats, seminar series, and other events, and they’re also exposed to the clinical aspects of disease.
Other graduate Ph.D. degrees available at the University of Virginia School of Medicine include those in biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics; biomedical engineering; microbiology, immunology, and infectious diseases; molecular cell and developmental biology; and molecular medicine. Students can also pursue the Neuroscience Graduate Program or the Medical Science Training Program. University of Virginia students interested in earning a graduate M.D. can choose from nearly 70 specialties.
Aside from their studies, UVA medical students can join some of the School of Medicine’s student organizations, which range from the Anesthesiology Interest Group to the Christian Medical Association. School of Medicine students can also volunteer at one of the school’s roughly seven community services sites, such as the Blue Ridge Poison Center, or the Center on Health Disparities.
The School of Engineering and Applied Science at University of Virginia has an application deadline of Dec. 15. The application fee is $85 for U.S. residents and $85 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $17,820 per year (in-state); full-time: $29,464 per year (out-of-state); part-time: $726 per credit (in-state); and part-time: $1,192 per credit (out-of-state). The 2020 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 4.7:1. The School of Engineering and Applied Science at University of Virginia has 161 full-time faculty on staff.
The University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science focuses research efforts in four broad areas: bioengineering, nanotechnology, information science and technology, and energy and environment. Graduate students at the school can partner with faculty exploring research areas ranging from tissue engineering to data mining at one of the 40 centers, institutes, and laboratories housed at the school’s Charlottesville campus.
These research centers include the Center for Applied Biomechanics, which studies the impact and injury caused by high speed automobile crashes, and the Center for Safe and Secure Nuclear Energy. The diverse range of research opportunities complements the degree offerings at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science. Graduate students can earn a master of science, master of engineering, or Ph.D. from one of the school’s 10 degree programs. Those departments include biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and materials science engineering, among others. The school also offers an accelerated master’s degree in systems engineering, and a joint M.E./M.B.A. degree program.
In addition to classroom and research opportunities, graduate students at the University of Virginia can gain international experience through study abroad programs in places such as Germany, Argentina, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and France. Service learning opportunities in Guatemala, Panama, Nicaragua, and South Africa are also available to graduate engineering students. Students can also network with the engineering community through one of several professional societies with chapters on campus.
