are students required to live in dorm or are students who live in chicago area allowed to commute?
Asked by MAZEN from IL
Hi Mazen, the University of Chicago has a two-year residency requirement, meaning all first-year students are required to live on campus for their first two years. Students may request to terminate their housing contracts. Reasons for requesting a termination of the housing contract usually include one of the following: university withdrawal or leave of absence, graduating at the end of the fall or winter quarters, studying abroad, medical/psychological (need-based) or financial (need-based).

Students are required to live on campus in dorms for their first 2 years.

Does the UChicago guarantee on campus dorm housing for all four years of my child's time at the University ?
Asked by Gary from OH
Hi Gary, University of Chicago requires all first-year students to live on campus for their first two years. Students living on campus during the spring quarter are guaranteed a space in their current house for the next academic year if they acknowledge that they wish to stay in their current assignment during the annual room selection lottery in early May. The university does not offer on-campus housing for graduate students or families.

Hello. I am wondering about the existence of a "campus town" type thing there. My daughter is thinking of going there. Are there restaurants and stores and such to go to that are close by. I graduated from University of Michigan and just loved the options that existed within easy walking distance of the campus. So just wondering if this university has anything.
Asked by Valerie from Illinois
There are two streets with cafes, restaurants and bookstores near campus, 53rd and 57th. There are upscale restaurants scattered in other locations too. What you won't find is a lot of national chains, although there are some. No place is totally student oriented, so you find a good mix. Keep in mind, too that U. Chicago is not only undergrads. It has a big grad school population (greater than undergrad I think) and folks that live in Hyde Park/Kenwood while working elsewhere in Chicago.

My mom went here, and she said that if your parents make less than (I forget the exact amount) you can apply to go to college for greatly reduced tuition. She had almost no student loan debt because of that

Hi! I was wondering how UChicago looks at college applications. What kind of "requirements" or categories you look at when accepting students.
Asked by Alex, Class of 2022 from Michigan
Hi Alex, the University of Chicago factors in supplemental essays, secondary school reports/transcripts showcasing academic achievement, teacher evaluations, a midyear report, as well as optional test scores. UChicago allows applicants to submit an optional video profile; creative writing projects; highlights from music, dance, visual art and theater performances; school capstone projects such as Advanced Placement capstone or the equivalent, research projects, business plans, or other work of note. Involvement in high school activities such as community service, editorial, student government and theater are also considered.

Do all of the classes at UChicago having a liberal arts layer to them? And what are the clases like? What are the Core requirements? Are the classes mostly lectures, discussions, etc.?
Asked by Jake S. from Illinois
Hi Jake, the University of Chicago is a liberal arts university. The college curriculum has three components: general education requirements, a major and electives. The core curriculum accounts for most of the first two years and offers Socratic-style classes with no more than 19 students. General education required courses fall into three categories: social sciences; natural sciences (biological sciences and physical sciences) and mathematical sciences; and humanities, civilization studies, and the arts. The core allows students to set their own pace by choosing their own courses.

It depends on your major. Economics classes are mostly lectures, while philosophy classes are mostly discussions. Everyone, however, has to take a least a couple of discussion classes.
