Amazing University that has shaped my identity

By Drew, From New York City

Proud to have attended Johns Hopkins as an undergraduate, and highly recommend this university to any student who may be interested. We all know that Hopkins has a strong premed program, but other career paths into banking, consulting, etc are relatively straightforward out of Hopkins. Although the career center still needs work, I had no trouble finding research, internships, and a full time job in investment banking coming out of Hopkins. My four years here were transformative, to such an extent that I must say that the school has truly shaped my identity. I know that Hopkins definitely has its downsides (cafeteria food is OK, surrounding area is alright but outside of Charles Village can get a little tricky), but the relatively intimate class sizes, vast and abundant research opportunities, and encouraging + supportive professors makes Hopkins such a wonderful place. I know my opinion is somewhat biased, but I wanted to share my love for the university that provided the best four years of my life. I would definitely look into science majors, Economics, AMS (Applied Math), and Writing Seminars here!

By RS 2000, From PA

No hand holding here snowflakes. Work hard and you will be rewarded. I'm a tenured prof. who found his Ph.D. relatively easy because of JHU prep. By the way, I had fun too. Fells Point is awesome.

Not for everybody

By Jake, 2017, From Philadelphia, PA

Disclaimer: I'm extremely proud of my degree and having attended JHU and would do it again despite my generally negative review. That being said, I agree with the most of what was said in the 1 and 2 star reviews I read. My time at Hopkins was the most stressful 5 years of my life (took a gap year for poor grades) and generally depressing. Until I actually tried to learn and not just pass I really hated class. Despite my generally negative experience (more likely because of it), Hopkins made me who I am today. The most valuable things I gained from Hopkins are how to move past my own failures and not be afraid of it, as well as how I learn and that I actually love learning(after realizing that trying to pass was not the right mindset). The education that you'll receive here is truly top notch but I was somewhat unprepared for it after highschool. Do research! I regret not doing it, and you don't need to be in a hard science to research. Almost all of the faculty do research, so it's a great way to network and also learn. You'll meet plenty of incredibly intelligent people here and I loved the cultural diversity of the students. I learned so much about other countries' culture from my friends. Social life is pretty dismal and that's coming from an introvert; the most popular destination on Friday was the library. Join an organization and become invested in it for a good social experience. The neighborhoods surrounding campus are pretty sketchy and someone tried, unsuccessfully, to mug me in front of the train station one time. The inner harbor is cool, Fells Point and Fed Hill are great spots once your 21. I feel like a lot of students don't get off campus but I love living in the city despite some of the detractions. I specifically told my younger brother not to apply here because my older brother and I had similar experiences here. I do recommend JHU but you need to know what you're getting yourself into.

A Place to Push Your Potential

By John, From NC

Hopkins was an incredibly fulfilling University full of many 'highs' and 'lows.' The Professors in the sciences are some of the most brilliant minds in the world, and will expect you to excel. I was pushed extremely hard, but it made me an incredible employee (health care consultant) and now Physician. The opportunities are boundless. I do not know where I would be without this place.

Excellent academics also for non-science students

By RT, '95, From New York

I graduated more than 20 years ago as a Writing Seminars major. The writing program at Hopkins was extremely rigorous, with small seminar classes and high expectations of students to produce quality work. I loved that environment; it pushed me to excel, to improve, and to reach. After graduation, I went on to law school and found that my undergrad education more than prepared me for that challenge. I am now a state-level judge, confident that without the education, motivation and writing/critical thinking skills that I acquired at Hopkins, I would not have achieved that goal.

I really like it here!

By Annie, Class of 2021, From Baltimore, MD

Current sophomore -- Hopkins is known for being a top-notch research University, and many students here are Biomedical engineering students, Public Health majors, or taking the Pre-med track. I'm doing none of these, and I'm having a great time. The coursework is very rigorous, but very fulfilling and all the professors I've had so far are very good. There are tons of clubs and activities happening on campus (though not as many as a larger school -- we only have 6000 undergrads), and the area is not as bad as people make it seem -- there is some crime (petty theft) but you're not going to be "attacked by the homeless" as one commenter describes -- in fact, there are several groups and programs on campus that are working to strengthen ties to the community. We're very close to a few awesome neighborhoods with a lot to do, and Inner Harbor and Towson are just short (free) shuttle rides away. The dining halls are pretty good, and the dorms are very nice. I would say the only major detractor for me from JHU is the overwork mentality -- but a lot of that comes from the very driven students that go here. There are several campus resources that can be used when a student is struggling (I've used many), but when everyone else is working themselves to the bone it's difficult not to get swept up in that. I would say that this school is great for people who are ready to learn and to work hard to do so! I love my major and the clubs I'm in and all the people I've met here.

More Opportunities than anywhere else

By Matthew3434, From Denver, Colorado

I am a current Junior at Hopkins and I still find myself impressed with the resources offered here. It is clear why JHU is the first research university. I have been working in a professors lab since the start of my Sophomore year. There is an ample number of labs all studying a variety of topics that could peak any student's interest. The professor I work under happily let me join him and has challenged me in the best way possible. Classes are tough but you'll find some very manageable ones to balance out the tougher ones. I have friends who have a 4.0 GPA, so it is possible but classes here require engagement and are for sure intellectually challenging. Hopkins is a great choice for any student looking to gain great experience in lab, challenge themselves in a classroom, or just grow as a problem solver.

rigorous academics, beautiful campus

By Class of 2005 premed, From California

Disclosure: my undergraduate experience at Hopkins is seen through the lens of a premed who majored in molecular biology. The basic science classes were extremely tough, but being able to hack it at Hopkins truly made medical school and subsequent academic pursuits that much easier. As they say, the harder your train, the easier the game! And at Hopkins, you train hard. What I enjoyed most about the curriculum, aside from the rigor and the challenge, was the fact that I could take graduate level classes as an undergrad, including a medical genetics class and history of medicine class based at the School of Medicine. Unparalleled undergraduate access to the most cutting edge classes and research opportunities. A major non-academic plus is the absolutely gorgeous Georgian campus, which in Spring is spectacular with the cherry blossoms out and in Winter is stunning when covered in snow. The campus truly is an oasis. I also hear that the dining experience has improved substantially, now being consistently ranked one of the best dining experiences in the country. Overall A+ for Hopkins premed experience!

Amazing experience at Hopkins

By J H, From Auckland New Zealand

I attended graduate school (School of Education) at JHU from 2012-2015 as an international student. To me, Jhu is much more than a prestigious name, but a place that I would call home away from home. I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to study from the best professors and practitioners in the field, who offered me much support in my personal and professional development, I also met my best friends in the programme, whom I consider family members. As many others mentioned, workload at Hopkins is Huge, so please be prepared for the challenge. Hopkins has a diverse student body with eventful social life; it is situated in a convenient location close to Baltimore's Inner Harbor and it is not too far away from Washington DC. Hopkins has much to offer to its students. Baltimore has a notorious name with its crime scene. However, there is always security on campus to ensure the safety of their students. While I was studying at Hopkins, my friends and I tried to stepped out the "bubble" to experience new things whenever we got a chance to. I would say that Baltimore is actually not as scary as it sounds to people, as long as you do not appear in the wrong place at the wrong time. (there's are definitely places in the city that you want to avoid going to ) I graduated from Hopkins more thank 3 years ago and I still miss my life at Hopkins very very much !

Don't be fooled by the rankings! Baltimore is horrible

By Shawn S., Class of 2018, From Bethesda, MD

I transferred from a state school and only applied to JHU. The two years I spent at Hopkins weren't how I liked my 20s to be spent. We were constantly stressed out by the workload of the courses which taught me close to nothing. I did super well in my classes, but ended up having to take 2 gap years before medical school just to recover and take the MCAT. There are two places you could go, Chipotle and MSE library. If you go farther away, like I did as a cyclist, you'd get robbed, hit by cars, attacked by the homeless. It's just not worth it. I keep reminding myself everyday of the horrible two years I spent at Johns Hopkins, and always tell my sister to consider how safe the city she lives in more than I did.
