Great school within the limits of the tuition

By Class of 1989, From Virginia

I am a 1989 graduate and was in the Marine Science program. I was 30 at the time of graduation since I was active duty Navy and was under an enlisted commissioning program - so was attached to the NROTC program. I had already had 2 years at Winthrop before attending USC and was a graduate of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion program. As a result, I was already a seasoned student and not 18 years old. I found the academics good, especially in Marine Science. Nuclear Power School is very demanding, and I was always good academically, so I did not find it overly taxing. Instead, I found the curriculum stimulating and well organized. Negative comments would revolved around the mathematics department generally. Too many students in one class then and often taught by grad students with English as a second language. The campus is very nice and historic. Columbia is a nice city with plenty of amenities and good weather. Since i was married while attending, I cannot comment on student life much, but I found the local nightlife vibrant and varied. I know the international business program was (and still is) also excellent. For a state supported, public school, you could do much worse. I have gone on to complete a Navy career and went to graduate school 3 times - so i was served well by my USC time and have no problem recommending Carolina.

Loved this school! It set me up for Success

By H c/o 2000, From Washington, DC

I had an amazing experience at USC: small class sizes overall, excellent liberal arts education, fantastically dedicated teachers who cared personally about students, a great (non-Greek) college life experience. I was fully prepared to go on to Georgetown for grad school, and to a highly successful career. I highly recommend this gem of a school.

Incredible education!

By Gamecock IB major, '19, From London

International business program is amazing. Seriously. Just amazing. Faculty are top notch. Facilities are like new. Outreach programs build a real sense of community amongst Ib students. So thankful to have chosen USC! Just graduated and already in my dream job. Thank you!

I LOVED USC

By Stegra Media, From New York City

I was very fortunate to attend USC from 2010 - 2014. I studied Visual Communications and was granted in state tuition as well as a scholarship for academics. I chose USC over my in state schools (Maryland) for a lot of reasons and I am very happy I did! Because of the classes, opportunities and people I met while attending South Carolina I'm currently living in New York City and have my dream job working in a field directly related to my major. In addition to learning what I needed to know for my career I had the best time of my life and always felt safe and met the most amazing people. I highly recommend this school!

Instability of program and lack of responsible faculty.

By W. Tinney (formerly doctoral student), From Aiken, South Carolina

I am an alum and did doctoral graduate studies in sociology from Fall, 1998 'till, basically, Spring, 2004. Program changes made it to where both program requirements and faculty responsible for programs were unstable (social demography). This was 'partially' responsible for an inability to complete the degree requirements even though coursework was completed with a significantly high GGPA. Staff is supportive and the facilities were good - but the faculty is non-responsive and in their own worlds - for the most part. I would likely recommend the undergraduate programs - but certainly not the sociology graduate program. I'll likely have to finish elsewhere if time and opportunity are there. Note: changes have transpired since I was there - now the specialization is 'population and health' - not social demography and they've made several demography-specific hires. So, my experience is dated but it 'is as it was' described here in.
