Learning to Learn

Luther provided me a lifelong love for learning and the tools to follow through. I used my degree for about 3 years but my skills to learn and communicate will (especially critical writing) allowed me to transition as opportunity presented itself.

Strong liberal arts tradition in a welcoming community

I graduated from Luther over ten years ago. I would generally describe the school as having a strong commitment to the liberal arts, ample resources to pursue many academic pursuits, and outstanding performing arts facilities. For me, the highlights of my Luther experience include incredible faculty support for some highly customized study abroad experiences and faculty that taught me incredible critical thinking skills. I eventually pursued an MBA at a Big Ten university and have found that my experience at Luther more than adequately prepared me for graduate school and the management roles in business. What prevents Luther from being a five-star school? In my mind, it's two major things: 1) Certain faculty / academic departments that are pretty weak and which the college should certainly address, and 2) A student body that, while generally welcoming and smart, is pretty ethnically, religiously, geographically and economically homogeneous. Then again, a Lutheran college in rural Iowa has to work much harder to cultivate a diverse student body than does a school situated in an urban / suburban area. As such, (2) is by no means a reflection of the college's priorities or lack of effort to build a diverse student body.
