Top-Notch Writing Program
By FDU Mom, From Philadelphia
My son just graduated. I can speak only of his major (writing) but the staff is top-notch and the administration was accomodating, quick to help with issues. The only department we hated was the billing department, which is probably the same at many universities. Oh, and Health Services, which is closed on weekends and not accomodating in the least. My son had the "Wroxton experience" and it was fantastic. You may want to keep in mind that only 55 students per semester can attend Wroxton and it's not geared towards a lot of majors. If you are a writer, do whatever is necessary to get into Wroxton. Student life at Florham is not very exciting. Convent Station is right next door, though, so NYC is a short ride away. The Florham campus is gorgeous, centered around the Vanderbilt mansion, with grounds which were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Everyone lives on campus, though, and for good reason. Madison and the surrounding areas are ridiculously expensive. That means you will have to pay for a meal plan for 4 years. The food is merely adequate. It was cheaper for my son to live in a hotel in his last year, especially since he drove home every weekend. Bottom line: if you're looking for a party school this is not the one. If you're looking for a great writing program in an inspiring setting then FDU is a great choice, especially with the opportunity to attend Wroxton - and at no additional cost. All of the writing profs are accomplished writers and there are internships available to work at the well-respected The Literary Review, which happens to be located on campus. Some of the alumni have found some very impressive jobs. That being said, if there's one problem with the writing program it's the lack of career counseling. There is a disconnect between learning the craft and practical application. All in all, it was a great program. Keep in mind that the college experience is pretty low key. As a parent who paid cash, I feel it was money well spent.
