Gettysburg College User Reviews and Ratings

Historic school offering a great education

By MiaKathryn, From Seattle, WA

If you are a strong student who likes a typical Greek dominated social scene and awesome D3 athletics, this is your dream school! I love Gettysburg and I'm so happy I made the choice to attend.

I had a great experience but...

By KB Class of 2019, From Philadelphia

I recently just graduated from Gettysburg College and I absolutely loved my time there. However, like all schools, this college is not for everyone. Personally for me, I had a great academic life. I was given opportunities that I dont think I could have had at other schools. I was awared research fellowships and interned with the NPS. I studied abroad and got to go to Oxford for an academic conference (on the college). I formed great relationships with my professors. My classes opened my eyes to different worldviews and ideologies. I grew as a person and a scholar. However, there are things to keep in mind. Depending on your personality, the enviornment can feel high pressured. At times it seems like everyone is involved in a million things. I do really well in this type of environment but not everyone does. Greek life is a large portion on campus. I personally was not a part of Greek life and did not feel socially ostracized. But it is a big part of Gettysburg's social scene. Gettysburg is located in a small town setting. The town itself is very nice but it is a small town with not a lot to do. Just keep that in mind. Gettysburg's diversity is slowly rising but it is something that the college is working on improving. Resident halls could be better. First Year rooms can be a hit or miss. Upper class has the ability to live on apartments. Only seniors can live off campus. I know Gettysburg's next, renovation project is the Resident halls. Again, I personally loved my time at Gettysburg. However, I do know other people feel differently. Like anything, do your research and visit the school in person if able so you can make an informed decision.

Disability support weak

By D, From Pennsylvania

Choose a different school for disability support I was told that Gettysburg College has students on the spectrum, even though they do not have a disiability office. They offer disability support through academic advising. There is a someone in the office in charge of coordinating it. After the accepted students day my son was very excited to go there after hearing about all the great classes and opportunities. He chose the school against our better judgement. We sent his neuropsychologist report and high school IEP to Gettysburg. They hire a psychologist from outside the school to read the reports and come up with recommendations. The one that read my son's report completely missed his language exception. He received the extended time he had in high school and an hour of academic counseling from an academic counselor that the school had hired. Kudos to her, she seemed to be very helpful. The problem came when My son took the language class he wasn't supposed to first semester and eventually had to drop it leaving him a class short. They replace the the language requirement with a cluster of cultural classes. Good luck getting into the class you want to take to fulfill those clusters. They fill up quickly. There is also a process to go to the professor and ask to be added to the class, but it involves multiple steps that doesn't work and causes added stress for someone with ASD. Support with class selection or priority registration for this population of students would be helpful. They could just make the classes slightly larger. Small class size are great, but not if you are paying this much and can't get in. I would not recommend this school to someone needing support. Disability is diversity too. Here there is no respect for these students.
