College of William and Mary User Reviews and Ratings

Awesome

By Class of 2023, From Williamsburg

Awesome school with amazing people. Social scene could be bigger, but it isn't to hard to find a party on weekends. So much to do in williamsburg. Food is sometimes gross at most of the dining halls (Marketplace is the exception), but you can use dining dollars at different places around campus (highly suggest getting the plan with less meal swipes and more dining dollars). Most freshman dorm rooms don't have AC, but most lounges do, and all other dorms do I think.

Not Great

By Eli, From Maryland

The campus environment is disquieting and isolating. In many respects, it feels like NOVA high school 2.0. The professors are fantastic, however.

OK

By Ben F., Class of 2019, From VA

Overall, the College is an ok school. There is a great academic environment, and students study hard (especially during exam time). The student food selection on campus is very poor and the dorms are terrible (i'm in one as I write this). There is a severe lack of diversity and with being a minority, it is very difficult and unfortunate that I don't have many friends like me. WE NEED MORE DIVERSITY! This can also be said of Williamsburg community, with all 74% white and only 13-14% Blacks. But the good news is that I can get off campus relatively easily with WATA, the local bus service that I can ride for free with ID and I do this almost every other weekend (with shopping/ other things) and I have even gotten to know some of the drivers who work for WATA (some are very nice). But other than, the student life here is pitful and some people are even thinking about transferring. Overall, do not expect to get your money's worth at this school.

Great college, but transfer students should be wary

By William and Mary Mom, From Leesburg, VA

We love love love William and Mary, and honestly, it is the perfect college for my daughter. Beautiful campus, great education, full of smart and driven students. However, she made the wise decision to complete her first two years at junior college before transferring to William and Mary. She took advanced classes and worked and did lots of volunteer and extracurricular activities and transferred with almost a 4.0. She continues to maintain a 4.0 at William and Mary. It is very disappointing that transfer students are ineligible for any merit money, and the whole transfer process was confusing at best. I am sure more and more students are going to go the transfer route, so I hope this is something the college will reconsider and approve upon.

A Community Effort: Growing the Leaders of Tomorrow

By Sweezy Class of 2018, From Va

I transferred to W&M as a mid-twenty-year-old with career experience in fast-growth tech start-ups. Attending The College was the best decision I made in my twenties. I don't see college as a grounds for vocational training. School doesn't prepare you for the individual tasks required in the working world. However, the person you can and will become by attending W&M will make you a standout individual. W&M encourages personal growth, deep inquiring into what the world is and subsequently who you are. In a world where technology perpetually marks old practices obsolete, the liberal arts succeed where professional and technical focus fails.

William & Mary is the best education for your money in the U

By Class of 91, From VA

The quality of education at William & Mary cannot be matched for the price tag. In an age where tuition can reach 75 thousand a year, William & Mary delivers on the promise of meeting the highest academic expectations without sacrificing its integrity to The mighty Dollar and sports programs that supersede all other needs.

Tribe Pride

By Annie, Class of 2021, From New York, NY

I love W&M. The academics are great, and the clubs are plentiful. I transferred to W&M for my sophomore year, and it is amazing, especially in comparison to my former four-year university. There are many opportunities to have fun, although w&m is not a big party school. There is always some Greek life or club party happening on the weekend. The professors are amazing. It's a lot of work, but if you care about academics it is not overwhelming. Dorms are decent, they'd be great but some freshmen don't get air conditioning and the swamp gets hot. Campus feels really safe, and so does the surrounding around. Plus, if you like history being right on CW is really really cool. The food and meal plan options suck. Which everyone says about their school but as someone who transferred W&M is particularly bad.

Best decision of my life

By Class of 2021, From Williamsburg, VA

Class of 2021 here, current student. Choosing William and Mary was one of the best decisions of my life. Growing up in Virginia afforded my some wonderful (and affordable) options for college. I looked at them all, from CNU to VT. I ended up torn between UVA and W&M, and didn't make my decision until over a year of deliberation. I chose W&M because I felt a very distinct pull towards the school. I couldn't get enough of the gorgeous campus, the student body, or the rich history. UVA has all these things too, and is a wonderful school; but W&M just struck a chord with me that no other school could touch. I think it's unfortunate that so many believe W&M to be an "academic camp" with no social life. While it's true that you can find people who devote themselves entirely to their studies, the majority of the student body maintains a healthy balance between work and play. Speaking for myself, I am a double major who has maintained a GPA above a 3.9. I work two jobs and hold multiple exec positions in various clubs and my fraternity. Despite liking to keep myself busy, more of my time is dedicated to hanging out with friends than being productive. Not a day goes by that I don't meet up with my closely-knit circle of friends that I made from my freshman hall. Admittedly, W&M is no party school, but there are plenty of students who go out every weekend. Greek life is comparatively pretty tame, but most students here don't seem to mind. The tame Greek scene on the campus is pretty inclusive, and it's not hard to find brothers/sisters who are a part of the LGBT community (or are not just rich white people). I do have some gripes with the school. Mainly, I feel we lean too much on our history. While I love learning about the school's past as much as the next guy, the school isn't just a place for history majors. We have a growing computer science department, a flourishing business school, and many more modern academic paths. Fortunately, the new president seems to agree.

Phenomenal Learning Platform

By Ted Z, Class of 1987, From Chapel Hill, North Carolina

William and Mary provided me the absolute best foundational education for my life. When I think back to my time as a student, some of the core principles and ideas I learned at William & Mary. I hope that others consider the thoughtful design, powerful curriculum and committed faculty of this great university. I am a distinguished professor in business at another leading university and an entrepreneur, and William and Mary prepared me perfectly for my future. I owe this institution a great debt, and want to share this for those considering their educational choices.

Unique and historic value

By K.More, proud parent., From Chesapeake VA

Outstanding undergraduate teaching and one of the premier values for in state applicants. One of the reasons for acceptance selectivity. Also, it helps that it is situated in one of the most historic and quaint areas of the country, Williamsburg VA.

Very Underrated, Excellent Experience

By BH, Class of 2012, From Boston, MA

Simply put, William and Mary will make you into a better person. The school encourages you to listen to other viewpoints and challenges you to evaluate your own opinions and perspectives. WM isn't the kind of school where everyone goes out every night (for better or worse), it's the kind of school where you make lifelong friends and are better prepared to build a meaningful life/career when you graduate. I've spent much of my career working with great people from schools ranked much higher on this list, and I'd put my William and Mary experience/education against any of theirs.
