Good Connections, It is What You Make It
By Alumni, From Notre Dame, Indiana
HCC has amazing connections across the street with Notre Dame. You can take courses there if your GPA is high enough, you can join their clubs and activities, and go to football games in the student sections. But, Holy Cross College has alot of growth that is needed. The positives: The areas they are great at are teaching the catholic faith and using their ND resources. The academic setup for degrees allows you to get multiple majors / minors since one class can count for more than one program's requirement. But the ND resources are unmatched. The classes are also fairly easy. The negatives: Graduates usually have a low income. The job resource staff and courses seem to be extremely outdated. They would be great for the 80s and 90s but they arn't very helpful for this job market. HCC is underfunded and that causes alot of issues. It forces the acceptance rate to be high to maximize their income by getting extra tuition payments. High acceptance means letting people in who are lazy / arn't able to compete at a high level class. As a result, class quality is lowered to meet those expectations. A lot of students are bored in class. But more intense classes and better professors would cause students to fail and demand a lower acceptance rate. It's a balance that HCC can't afford to influence. Perhaps within the next few years HCC will continue to grow and begin to make those changes. I think it has potential to become a much better college. But they need to be extremely frugal with finances. A few great ideas: require each student to take one class at ND if they have above a 3.0 GPA. Reduce the huge scholarship you give everyone by a small percentage and reject more students. (as your quality improves, so will your number of applications). Hire young and previously successful career coaches. Reach out to successful alumni and ask them to volunteer by reviewing resumes. Be more careful with the use of investments. Get a new housing director.

The Ideal College Experience
By Nathan, From Minnesota
Holy Cross College has strong academic programs, a diverse student body, and engaging faculty and staff. This growing institution is an excellent place to build the foundations for a strong career. The student body is committed to academics, service, and expanding perspectives. Holy Cross College is dedicated to educating hearts and minds by incorporating the best parts of Catholic education and the liberal learning process. Being part of the Tri-Campus is another critical part of the Holy Cross experience allowing students to take full advantage of both Holy Cross's intimate, relationship-focused program and the large campus benefits of being located on the same property as the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary's College. Holy Cross students get the best of both worlds and graduate ready for anything.

Small and swimming against tide
By Mick, From Indiana
Holy Cross (Indiana) is dependent on Notre Dame Univ which is across the street. About half the First Year students are waitlisted ND freshmen who will return there. Every few years, there is a reckoning and HCC has an existential crisis. This will truly be the case in the next round of accreditation. The forces buffeting Higher Ed and Catholicism and the school's unnatural subsidy from ND keep HCC from becoming the school they might become if not for these pressures and influences. As a result, students get a lesser experience and an unfavorable education.
