Good school with a lot of opportunities!
By Joeseph, class of 2019, From Chicago,, IL
I liked it here a lot. I graduated from the Gies College of Business. Some of the classes are somewhat pointless (BUS101) but most are incredibly helpful. There are tons of opportunities here.

Not for everyone
By KMCNurse, From Champaign, IL
I completed my undergraduate degree here in a non-stem major as a transfer student. It is essentially a research institution posing as a university to bring in revenue. If you are looking for teachers who present the course material and want you to leave here with knowledge of the subject matter, consider going elsewhere. The professors are paid through research grant work, so there is little to no interest in teaching on their behalf; graduate assistants (TAs) are the closest you'll get to instruction. The libraries and resources for academic research are world class. If you don't join a fraternity or sorority, it can be difficult to have a social life here. You'll notice that the students in the graduate programs with higher entrance or standardized test scores rarely attended here as undergraduates, but went somewhere where they were taught in an academic curriculum versus teaching themselves out of the book, as is essentially what happens here. The housing here can be quite costly. Beer and circus are two descriptors that come to mind when I reflect on this experience. If I had to do it over again I would have transferred someplace else to complete my undergraduate degree.

Cookie Cutter Career Path = Lack of Individuality
By Danielle A., From Illinois
I'm an undergrad student in the College of Business. And I'll start by saying that the public Accounting track is so heavily pushed here that all the other majors are neglected. You can find a similar story with social life. If you're not in the Greek System, there is not much else to do here but "party" and go to the bar. In addition, professional organizations that are "highly selective" are more of a popularity contest of who you know, rather than a fair test of character. This isn't necessarily the University's fault, but rather a byproduct of what happens when you cater towards certain type of people. I am 100% confident that some would love it here. Especially those coming from wealthy feeder towns such as Naperville. But of course, not everyone directly fits into these molds and they are the ones that don't get to tell their story and are left unheard. There are definite pluses to this school as well, buses are convenient, food is decent and you will receive a decent education. But prepared to deal with a lot of inequities when you try to deviate from the norm here.

UIUC is an excellent school. The teacher education program prepared me well for my career as a teacher and later a school administrator.

A school that cares about minorities and low income families
By Tito, From Chicago Illinois
This university acknowledged me for my hard work in high school by giving me an offer to attend even though I did not have the best test scores. It also helped me by removing the hard financial barriers it takes to attend university. I am now well on my way to law school as a first generation latino minority. Thank you U of I! Illini always.

An outstanding institution!
By Chuck B. Class of '82, '84, & '87., From Batavia
Studying the arts in a place where research, innovation, and change are an everyday expectation--that is a life altering experience. There are few institutions that have altered the technology world to a greater extent than UIUC. That expectation infuses everything the campus offers.

Prepared Me for the Real World
By Class of 2012, From Chicago, IL
Understanding the campus has changed quit a bit since I graduated, but the academics and overall experience is still the same. This school values it's students and gives them all the tools needed to succeed; they show you how to fish. Best in class professors, now if only the sports team would catch up. :)
