Curricula Descriptions

Full-time program

Full-Time MBA students follow a core curriculum in their first year. The 22-month program requires 60 credits to graduate and is best described as total immersion. Designed for students ready for a major transition, our core classes include foundational building blocks for tomorrow's business leaders: data analysis, finance, managerial economics, marketing, financial accounting, strategy formulation and implementation, ethics, organizational behavior, communications and more. A built-in global field experience, participation in an optional 10-week team-based Action Learning Project (ALP), and summer internships wrap up year one. In the second year of the program, students have the opportunity to tailor the curriculum to their professional needs by enrolling in electives. With over 183 elective sections to choose from, students can take electives during the day, evening or weekend. In the second year, they become the CEO of their educational experience.

Executive program

For experienced professionals who want to sharpen their edge, the Executive MBA is designed to deepen leadership and decision-making skills. The 22-month alternating weekend schedule includes core courses in functional areas; four week-long executive forums that provide real world examples of leadership practice with visiting CEOs; a third semester elective block which facilitates areas of interest; and an expanded global forum in the final semester that focuses on creating the mindset to lead the global firm.

Part-time program

Designed for working professionals who want to accelerate their careers. The Rice MBA for Professionals meets two evenings a week or on alternating weekends over 22 months. There is also the option of the extended evening schedule which would allow for completion of the program over three years (up to five). The first year builds a foundation of fundamental business principles through core courses. With over 183 elective sections to choose from, students can take electives during the day, evening and weekend in the second year. They become the CEO of their educational experience. A built-in global field experience and capstone course lets students put their learning to work on real-world challenges. Students take a minimum of eight electives based on career goals, with 54 credits required for graduation. The same faculty teach across all MBA programs.

Part-time distance learning program

Beyond equipping you with the skill set you need to excel at the top level of your organization, our program will connect you with a diverse community of leaders from around the world. Together, you’ll work to rethink your approaches to common business challenges, such as managing human and financial capital, solving problems across functional teams and integrating new technologies into your core business strategies. The program consists of 54 credits and can be completed online in 24 months. You and your professors will meet each week for face-to-face, webcam-enabled class sessions. Our small class sizes allow for rich discussion and debate. You can complete assignments — which include real-world case studies, video simulations and collaborative projects — each week from anywhere, using any connected device. Our program includes Intensive Learning Experiences (ILE) and Global Field Experiences (GFE), in-person learning experiences, which are hosted both on the Rice University campus and in locations around the world, to allow you to connect in person with peers, faculty and mentors. You will participate in simulations, immersions, seminars, intersessions, and study abroad opportunities to develop and practice new hands-on skills.

Specialty master's program

Our Master of Accounting (MAcc) curriculum provides both the technical knowledge needed to pass the CPA exam and an interdisciplinary understanding of how business and accounting interact. The 10-month, 36-credit hour program has a lockstep, cohort-based curriculum, meaning students will take all of the same courses at the same time. This curriculum structure leads to a close-knit environment among the students and faculty. The Rice MAcc has three types of courses: semester-long courses, half semester-long courses, and “Intensive Learning Unit” (ILU) courses. The four ILU courses last just one week but meet four hours a day so that students can fully focus on one topic.

The application fee is $85 for U.S. residents and $85 for international students. Its tuition is full-time: $51,500 per year and part-time: $2,861 per credit. The 2020 Ph.D. student-faculty ratio is 5.1:1. The George R. Brown School of Engineering at Rice University (Brown) has 139 full-time faculty on staff.

Graduate students at Rice University’s Brown School of Engineering can join with faculty and outside researchers to explore topics ranging from tissue engineering to geophysics at one of nearly 20 research centers and institutes located at the school’s Houston campus. Research centers at Rice’s engineering school include the Center for Multimedia Communication, which researches algorithms and wireless communication, and the Shell Center for Sustainability.

The diverse range of research opportunities supplements the degree offerings at Rice University’s Brown School of Engineering. Graduate students can earn a master’s degree in several areas, including bioengineering, mechanical engineering, and computer science. The school also offers Ph.D. tracks in each of its engineering departments.

In addition to classroom and research opportunities, graduate students at the Brown School of Engineering can participate in student groups such as the Graduate Student Association or a professional society, many of which have student chapters at Rice.

Notable alumni from Rice University’s Brown School of Engineering include former NASA astronauts John Olivas and Peggy Whitson, who has spent more total time in space than any other woman.
