Very Underrated University!
By Katie, Class of 2020, From West Palm Beach, FL
As a current student, I can confidently state that American University is very underrated - especially on the US News' ranking. AU's School of International Service is one of the best in the United States and perhaps even in the world. For anyone who intends to major in International Relations, Political Science, Pre-Law, Communications, Economics, History, or a similar field, AU is a perfect choice. Furthermore, unlike many other schools in DC, AU actually has a campus. The school has been expanding and renovating older buildings. American's newer buildings are some of the best. The university's community has been very welcoming. Even as a transfer student who lives off-campus, I was able to find friends quite fast. It is easy to find people with similar interests and views. The professors have also been really nice. I have gone to the office hours of all of my professors, and they have all been very helpful. The only negative I can think of is dorms. AU is currently working on updating their dorms, but the living conditions in the them are still somewhat poor. Living off-campus might a good idea. Also, the constant construction on-campus is becoming kind of frustrating, but that probably won't be an issue for future students. For any future students, I would recommend participating in orientation (meaning, Eagle Summit or Transfer Transitions), attending convocation, and joining clubs or professional sororities/fraternities. That is the best way to get involved and become a part of the American University community.
