My grandson wants to become an engineer- he is an advocate of the great outdoors and our environment , a stellar student who has taken the most challenging classes at his high school and is a leader BUT he doesn't feel qualified to apply to MIT as his test scores were mid 1300's- is he right in assuming this or can I continue to encourage him to reach for the stars. Thank-you.

Asked by Annie from Turner,Maine

Continue to encourage him. Mid-1300's is very good. He's not that far off from being very competitive. Have him take a good SAT prep class. My son's first SAT score without any study course or class was 1400 (700 EWR/700 Math) in April of his Junior year. I spent the money and enrolled him in C2 Education Center classes. He retook it in August and scored a 1490 (700 EWR/790 Math). He was admitted to MIT Early Action in December. We were told during a Fall regional MIT presentation that about 90% of their current freshman class scored between 780-800 on the Math. Also understand that they take a holistic approach to assessing each student's application. A lot of weight given to the student's essays and letters of recommendations. Admissions wants to know about the student as a person and their character. Extracurricular activities are also very important. Your grandson is smart. Have him also cast a wide net of applications--other wonderful engineering schools are Columbia, Caltech, UC-Berkeley, Harvey Mudd, Georgia Tech, Rose-Hulman, University of Washington, Montana State.
