Excellent College Life

Michigan offers a unique blend of best of academics and vibrant happy college days. Study as much as required and let your hobbies and passion take you to the world of joy! Opportunities galore and you always find a group with whom you can relate with your ideas in an ambiance that fosters creativity and long term friendship. Most importantly, there is no discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, and family background. All are equal! During those 4 years, I could see my son transform from being a bookworm teenager to a confident young person ready to conquer the world.

Fantastic college experience.

Michigan gives you that rare combination of elite academics, big campus activities, and top athletic teams. There are basically only a few other public schools that can do this (UCLA, Berkeley, UVA, and UNC). But then you take all those great things and you combine it with an amazing college town, and it results in a fantastic college choice. I had multiple classmates who turned down Ivy League schools for U-M, because they wanted the academics and the typical fun undergraduate experience. While other schools are basically just football factories (especially a specific school down in Ohio), Michigan is a powerhouse academic factory with a football team attached. When I wear the block M, I'm repping the overall university, and not just some athletic team. The alumni brand is strong in almost every major city, and especially in NYC/Chicago/DC/California.

Disappointing

I got my Master's Degree at Michigan, in my forties. I relocated to Michigan for 2 years to do this. I couldn't afford to live in Ann Arbor so I found a place in Ypsilanti. I worked in Ann Arbor however, at a coffee shop on campus . I found Ann Arbor to be snobbish, unconcerned about the struggling communities closest to it, and very self-satisfied. If the university is involved in a significant amount of recovery and redevelopment in the city of Detroit, they need to advertise it better. Because I was not aware of any involvement by the university in Detroit. The people I met in Detroit, particularly people of color, told me that they did not feel welcome in Ann Arbor and they refused to go there in their recreation time. Yes, Ann Arbor is a beautiful city. In many ways Ann Arbor embodies the American dream. In other ways it embodies the American Nightmare, which is the real truth in America. And that is that the good life is reserved for people with light skin who know the secret handshakes. I was disappointed. I have Michigan on my resume. But I do not claim them as my alma mater. And I won't do until they start showing me some real change.

A lifelong impact

There is a reason so many alums wear clothing that displays the block M. Michigan is a highly ranked research university that has a close and open relationship with the surrounding community. Ann Arbor is often described as a small city with big city amenities. This combination has long attracted talented undergraduate and graduate students, has convinced many alums to remain in the area, and attracts many retirees to return to Ann Arbor. I earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University. Following a career in Boston, I returned to Ann Arbor in retirement. It is both a pleasure and stimulating to be surrounded by so many talented students from around the country and world. Students and community members all have easy access to an impressive range and quantity of offerings beyond the classroom. These include diverse and world class academic lectures, music, drama, and sports.

Grew up and matured at UM. It was very competitive environment and sometimes I felt like the dumbest person in the class but with lots of work I learned lots and did well. There was always help if you needed it but you had to ask for it. They didn't hunt you down. Therefore I learned to figure things out and became more independent. My first year of college, I was at a religious school and I was coddled to say the least. I was glad I transferred to Michigan and had the opportunity to grow intellectually and socially. Weekends were fun but at Michigan you don't fool around during the week as you are there to learn. When I had friends visit from other universities they were shocked at how quiet Michigan was during the week. We were studying. But by Saturday noon the party began until Sunday afternoon. Their schools weren't nearly as difficult. Michigan pushed me and all for the better. Plus I made lasting friends and connections. Go Blue!!!

I had the good fortune of going to the University of Michigan directly out of a small rural high school. Ultimately I stayed there for seven years and three degrees. Those seven completely changed the course of my life: I met my best friends, found my calling as a mental healthcare professional, and was launched into a career that I am passionate about to this day. My devotion to my alma mater is exceeded only by my gratitude for all that U. of M. gave to me. Go Blue!

If you consider campus safety, curriculum quality, professor prestige, research opportunities, value for the money, chances of getting a job after graduation, health services, and overall town grooviness, the University of Michigan can compete with any school - public or private. Cultural and sporting opportunities are plentiful, and the school's infrastructure is second to none. As a graduate of both UM and an Ivy League school, I prefer UM's overall experience. Moreover, Ann Arbor has been voted as the best place to live in the US several times.

Although it has been awhile, I'm a grad of 2006, I can't think of a better place that I could have gone. Now, we didn't have cell phones, or Facebook (that came out my senior year), but still an absolute blast. I was an LSA major but took a ton of classes in the Kinesiology department. If you want the experience of a large school with an unbelievable academic standing, along with amazing sports, this is the place! Go Blue!
