Emory University User Reviews and Ratings

Truly One of a Kind

By Andrew, Class of 2019, From Los Angeles, CA

The school has amazing opportunities, amazing professors, amazing resources, and amazing buildings. This school prepares you well for life after college, whether you plan on going to a professional school, getting a Master's, etc. The surrounding area is also really nice, with many places to eat and go shopping, and only a 15-20 min drive from the heart of Atlanta. My experience was truly unforgettable, and I often wonder if I would've been this satisfied at any other school. Many students came from around the country and the world, not just Georgia. Funny enough many students were Ivy rejects, like myself, so the average SAT and ACT scores compare very closely with other Ivies. Professors are world class. Emory's reputation is astounding.

The Most Memorable Time of My Life

By Taimour, Class of 2016, From Lahore, Pakistan

Emory is a beautiful place; Its a beautiful vibrant campus, has amazing facilities, with top notch professors and has really pleasant weather during the school year. It's small enough that's it's not overwhelming with too many people, but big enough that you don't miss out on any major facets of a healthy college life (except maybe school spirit). Classes are small, and (for most majors) really interactive with great professors. Atlanta is a big bustling city with lots to eat and lots to do. Campus is located in an ideal suburban type setting very close to busy parts of the city, and has lots of small eateries and such nearby. All in all a really fantastic time of my life and a place where I learned the most. Wish i could visit from Pakistan more often.

Accessable professors, high quality education

By GP ('87 and parent of '20), From Atlanta

Emory offers a well-balanced experience. The professors are top-rate and most of them are great teachers. The quality of life on campus is better than most other top schools, and the students are friendly. Out daughter has had a great experience so far and has enjoyed the extracurriculars as well as the fun of being in Atlanta.

A College Experience That Was Well Worth It

By Emory Parent, From Florida

My son graduated from Emory about 8 years ago and it would be hard to express how positive his experience was. In his senior year he had about a week when he was booked up daily with meetings with recruiters. He received several job offers and took one in NYC. He said his professors were accessible, the campus was beautiful, the other students were friendly and the environment is safe but near to a vibrant, big city with lots to do. That being said, I think Emory is not for everyone. Without D-One athletics, this is not a place where you gather on Saturday afternoon with 50,000 other people to watch other students play a sport. Instead, you play sports yourself. My son was impressed with the variety of activities at the modern gym as well as the variety of campus groups with other activities- something for everyone. Also, it's not for the partying college kid; it's too hard academically. My son had his share of fun but he was impressed with the motivation and focus of the other students. I also want to make it clear that there is a pretty good amount of merit-based scholarship money available. My son got some of that (thank goodness). He didn't get the full-ride Emory Scholars scholarship (too bad) but that opportunity exists. When we were doing our research we found statistics that showed that Emory had the highest percentage of students in the top universities with Pell grants. I'm not sure I stated that correctly or if it's still true but I like that; it means you're not going to some kind of fancy school that's made up entirely of pampered rich kids. Overall, my son and I both think, at Emory, the experience was money well spent.

Emory Father

By RY, From NYC

What i liked about Emory is that my son got the moneys worth. There are almost no distractions: Its not a "ra-ra" school with lots of sports teams, its not big on fraternity (which either should be abolished or scope/mission revisited). Most of his class mates came to Emory for one thing: TO STUDY !!! One thing though left me with bad taste. My son got an A in Bio (and most other sciences), but because he was aiming for medical school, he did extra curriculums in science (Bio), was also a TA. When it came to submitting written recommendations to Med School, the Bio Prof , who knew him by name because he worked in his Lab, dragged his feet till the last day of dead line, and even that after we had to write to Dean. I ope it is not representative of the school. But if a student worked hard, why not to give a letter?!

Excellent education, great location

By G. P., From Georgia

Our daughter loves Emory and is getting a great education there. Professors are top quality and very friendly. It offers a healthy balance of liberal arts and quantitative/professional studies. It's a beautiful campus, close to Atlanta but with a park-like appearance. Job and internship opportunities abound thanks to Atlanta's thriving economy. The only watch out is that there are no Division 1 athletics.

Pros and Cons

By Fenrir, Class of 2016, From California

Pros 1. Amazing professors, who are genuinely invested in your success, will help you through every step, and teach amazing courses. 2. Have great resources, especially if you are in Pre-med, B-School, or Psychology. 3. Close to Atlanta (technically its a 15 min drive to downtown but there are shuttles and uber is cheaper than other places). 4. Cost of living is cheap. Cons 1. Admins have the social sciences and humanities at a lower priority. If you are thinking this would be like a liberal arts college (as Emory sometimes suggest), it isn't. Especially since what happened in 2012. 2. Not much to do immediately near campus. You need to go a bit to find stuff to do. Though there's the Emory Village, the shops there have been closing constantly during the four years I attended (obviously students are not going there). 3. Dining is below average, but they force you to buy a meal plan with unlimited swipes in your freshman year and a limited one in your sophomore year; it is expensive. 4. There's an abundance of school activities and clubs, but many lack initiative, runned just by the execs, or are just used to put in one more line in resumes. 5. There's always some sort of construction going on: your tuition is most likely being used to build a building you won't even use. (Though to be fair, you may reap the benefits of the upper classmen's tuition). Things to consider. 1. I would recommend only based on your prospective major. Refer to the pros and cons section to see if you will be a good fit. 2. Emory lacks school spirit (I personally enjoyed this). But this also means that the undergrad community is a bit cliquey and that you have to be very active to get the most out of it. 3. The weather is decent. It's hot during the summer and rainy in the winter. During spring and autumn, many students carry around both sunglasses and umbrellas all the time. 4. Living in dorms can be more expensive than living off-campus, but you have to live in one until sophomore year.

I had an absolutely amazing experience at this school. I can't stress enough the access to exceptional resources and opportunities this school provides, no matter the discipline. Fantastic school for business and pre, med. Plus, the campus is gorgeous, so that's definitely a plus.

Incredible school!

By Mom of 2020, From Jacksonville Beach, FL

Emory provides not only a remarkable education, but also a warm, welcoming environment for all students. The student body is very diverse, and they all accept and even celebrate each other's differences. Accessibility to teachers, exciting campus environment, and relationship with CDC and Carter center are also nice!

Grateful to be here

By Anonymous, Class of 2020., From WA

I began my first two years of my Emory journey at Oxford College and would absolutely do it again. The abundance of leadership opportunities at Oxford and Emory push students to escape their comfort zones and advance towards personal growth. Furthermore, I genuinely appreciate the faculty as they care deeply about the success of their students. Two of my professors have gotten coffee with me and we happily chatted away about research and future career opportunities. Emory is an incredibly diverse school and I know I made the right decision to attend here.

Come and See Emory!

By Happy Parent, From Midwest

Our child received admission to Brown, Cornell, Duke, Emory, a few other highly regarded institutions, and was wait listed at Harvard and Yale. Being our last to put through college, we were pleasantly surprised by Emory's financial aid. Emory made it possible to finish debt free (and we're neither wealthy nor poor...actually, in the Middle...like the TV show). Emory is a lovely, safe campus in a grand neighborhood of a major, diverse, metropolitan city. The Emory experience is outstanding, providing access to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Emory University Hospital, The Carter Center, and other internship outlets. The CDC, in fact, is immediately adjacent to the campus. One may rightly wonder about a northeast bias in all the college rankings. Emory is a fantastic launching pad for the premier graduate schools. For our child's academic interest, there was simply no meaningful distinction between Emory and the schools listed above...and, again, no student or parent loans were needed! After making campus visits (and too many, for sure), our child came to see Emory's quality of life in Atlanta's Druid Hills as superior to Ithaca, Providence, and Durham, which is an old tobacco town. Druid Hills was a pleasant surprise! Go and see Emory! We're glad to have made the visit! Atlanta's airport is a big plus, including being a Delta hub. There are easy transportation options between the campus and airport. Flights home at break times were cost effective for mom and dad.
