Excellent Honors Program
By Brent, 2008-2012, From Atlanta, GA
Despite another person's comment on the lack of research, GSU does a lot of research and provides extensive resources for conducting research. The caveat here is that they put most of that effort into their honors program. The Georgia Southern honors program receives a lot of benefits. Books are borrowed instead of purchased. Dedicated staff and student workers help you write scholarship and grant requests for both research and financial aid. They also encourage and assist honors students with on-campus employment and voluntary positions as well as study and teach abroad opportunities. The honors program is not super difficult to get into, nor to stay in, as long as you keep up with the minimum experiential learning requirements, fulfilled by being employed on campus, volunteering a certain number of hours either on campus or with any nearby non-profits, conducting research, or studying abroad. As I said previously, they really go out of their way to help honors students not only get into programs, but also to finance their way—either by flexing their budget to help or by giving extensive assistance with applying for grants. As a Carnegie institute, all professors are required to publish in their field regularly, and it's the honors and upper-level students that are initially picked for assistant roles, followed by students that show a high level of interest. If you aren't an honors student, there are still opportunities, but you are on your own to find them and apply for them. But don't let this discourage you from attending. For students looking for a place to spread wings, you can find a party every weekend somewhere if you are looking. For students wishing to stay away from the party scene, the library and computer labs are open at all times, all on-campus housing is zero-tolerance. Statesboro can seem small, but there's plenty to do. The nearby area is a bubble of activities geared to young adults, but there's plenty other things just outside the bubble.

NOT a Research Institution
By Amber W, From Statesboro, GA
I would like to see the hard data on how student and prof research is supported by GS. I see it touted much here at GS but in reality, little is done by both students and faculty.
