Profs with Real-World Work Experience Desperately Needed
By Engineer2020, From Golden, CO
The best profs at Mines by far are the ones who have actually worked in the industry. There is a big difference. It doesn't even matter if they have a PhD or not. Engineering is basically applied science, but too many of the profs at Mines have never applied their knowledge in the real-world workforce. Mines needs to stop hiring young profs who have spent their entire life in academia. Mines will never be an ivory tower of abstract theory, the best it can hope for is to teach applied skills. And get rid of the entire tenure system, there are too many profs who waste time writing useless papers which aren't even real research-- they just do it to prove to the admin that they are checking the boxes to get promoted to the next level. I've got news for you: a good undergrad prof is always almost never a true researcher... and vice-versa.

it was extremely good until things change

School decided to enroll more students and underqualified professors into the school. Few young professors showed no humbleness, no professional knowledge, no professional working experience, and being condescending to everyone. For my department, they hired the WRONG profession for the department chair. I can feel the decline in my department. PLEASE get rid of any professor that does not have professional work experience out of school!! Since the school wants more research, so they hire a bunch of professors who only have research experience. Bureaucracy is becoming a problem, too. Other than that, everything else does not have any major problem.

Fantastic School

I am very proud to be an alumni of Mines. It is not an easy school, but all of the hard work teaches you a great work ethic and makes it all worth it in the long run.
