DePaue prepared me for a great career

I am a graduate of DePauw and loved my time there. Professors were excellent and knew every student by name. I attribute my successful career to many of the great skills I gained at DePauw. I also made my best friends there for life and as recent research indicates positive adult relationships are linked to better health and wellness.

Severely disappointing

My son graduated from DePauw this past year and his experience, outside of the friendships he made with classmates, could not have been more disappointing. DePauw is trying to reconcile it's tradition of a having a popular Greek system with the legacy of white privilege these institutions represented. The tension between a majority of the faculty, some administrators and students and the over 60% of students who join a fraternity or sorority is palpable, and dominates the culture. The administration appears arrogant, ignorant and frankly is ill prepared to cope with the situation. My son received over one thousand emails related to "bias incidents" in his four years at DePauw, while I don't recall him saying he received even one unsolicited e mail from a professor. Every college faces difficult challenges, but there are other institutions besides DePauw that are doing a better job managing these challenges and creating an environment where earning an degree can be the priority.

Amazing faculty and experiential learning

I advise 15 first-year students at DePauw, and have been amazed at how connected and involved they already are. Many are honors scholars or Fellows (Management and Media Fellows are especially popular, but there are even more specialized programs such as Environmental Fellows), all of them have already used the Hubbard Center to begin making career connections, all have heard from a young alumni already employed in the field as a mentor, and most are doing service work. It's a small school, but the level of networking and connections and especially how close students feel to faculty is very different from the large state university where I was adjunct faculty.

Great school

Our son recently graduated from DePauw. He had wonderful professors and received generous support for three summer internships. He was a Media Fellow, which was a good experience. The town of Greencastle improved greatly over his time there, and the already-beautiful campus added and renovated a couple of major buildings. We're very glad he chose DePauw.

Throughout my years here, I have consistently found DePauw to be a severely overrated institution with admissions officers who promise much but a student experience that delivers little. There is little to do outside of Greek life and, for years, administration has purchased token students of color, with large financial aid packages, to make the University appear to be much more open minded than it is without providing the necessary support to help those students find a sense of belonging. The institution's ranking has declined for at least three consecutive years and it appears to be in decline. As a current student, I would not recommend DePauw, however, I cannot speak highly enough of the gifted faculty - many of which DePauw is not desrving of. Sadly, though, gifted faculty do not make up for a poor environment and poor staff.
